In today’s society, the handgun is one of the most effective means of personal protection
and self-defense, and the South Carolina Law Abiding Citizens Self-Defense Act of 1996 makes it possible for state residents
to legally carry a concealed firearm for that purpose.
South Carolina law provides that state residents and qualified non-residents, upon proper
application to the State Law Enforcement Division, SHALL BE ISSUED a permit to carry a Concealed Weapon. Once issued a South Carolina Concealed
Weapons Permit, in addition to South Carolina, you can lawfully carry a concealed weapon in the following states:
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Qualifications to obtain a South Carolina Concealed
Weapon Permit:
The applicant must be at least 21 years of age to apply for the permit, and not be prohibited
by federal or state law from possessing a firearm. * (Individuals 18 years old and older can take the South Carolina
Concealed Weapon Permit Course and receive a training certificate, however the CWP application to SLED must not be
sent until the applicant reaches their 21st birthday.)
The applicant must attend an 8 hour handgun education class, and upon completion, receive
a score of 70% or higher on a written examination.
The training course must include statutory and case law relating to handguns, the use-of-deadly
force, handgun use and safety, proper storage methods and actual firing of a handgun in the presence of a SLED Certified Firearms
Instructor.
*
The applicant must bring a handgun which is in safe operating condition and 50-rounds of ammunition to the training course.
We have a limited number of rental handguns available if you do not have a handgun at the time of your training course. (To
guarantee that a handgun will be available for you on the day you take your course, you must make arrangements to rent
a handgun at the time you register for a class. We also have ammunition available for any handgun you may
rent and the ammunition will cost you the same price that it cost us.)
If you meet the above
requirements, you can get a SC Concealed Weapons Permit and provide the means to SAFELY and LEGALLY protect yourself and your
loved ones.
